Sanremo

The "Pearl" of the Riviera dei Fiori, the extreme strip of western Liguria, combines surprising features that make it a unique place and ideal destination for a stay.

First of all, it is Glam

that finds its way into the many bars and restaurants of the center and the coast, in the oldest Italian Casino of the last century, and has the highlight of the season in the Italian Song Festival held every year at the Ariston Theater in the month of February. We are in the pedestrian area of Corso Matteotti, the pulsating heart of Sanremo, the main shopping street that also houses Borea d'Olmo palace, home to the Matuziana Museum and Pinacoteca. The streets behind, via Palazzo and via Corradi, full of shops and characteristic restaurants have an authentic and popular charm in the shadow of the Romanesque cathedral of San Siro.

But Sanremo is also history,

which speaks internationally in the Russian Orthodox Church of 1913, dedicated to the Tsarina Maria Aleksandrovna who at the end of '800 stayed for a long time in Sanremo and donated the first palms to the city, planted in Corso Imperatrice. The resort oozes charm in its historic center dating back to the year 1000, the “Pigna”, so called because being in an elevated position and with perched houses, seen from the sea looks like a pine cone. Sanremo preserves here its medieval heart protected by the walls. Over the "rivolte" of San Sebastiano, covered and dark passages, the carrugi become narrow and steep and the houses piled up. In the Middle Ages the elders gathered in the square of the Capitolo where there was the first public palace and even now we see a protruding stone that is said to be used for the executions. Today a private library, maintained by the good will of some inhabitants, invites to the exchange of books. The Pigna was the scene of the many struggles with the Genoese, who conquered Sanremo by razing its castle to the ground. A curious testimony of these ancient acrimonies is found in the Piazzetta dei Dolori. In the portico of the beautiful 16th century oratory built in San Sebastiano for being spared by the plague, we read a Genoese proclamation that forbids "to urinate" for contempt of the conquerors, under penalty of imprisonment. Also worth a visit are the 17th century Church of S. Giuseppe and the Palazzo dei Conti Sapia Rossi where Napoleon Bonaparte stayed in 1794. And, on the top of the hill, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Costa. Today the association "Pigna Mon Amour" involves the 2500 inhabitants of the ancient village to revive some areas and animate the summer evenings with shows and concerts.

Sanremo is nature.

The extraordinarily mild climate, due to the position between the sea and the mountains behind, favors a bursting nature, incredibly similar to that of the islands of the south of the Mediterranean including palm trees, bougainvillea, ficus monumental, eucalyptus, prickly pear, aloe. It’s everywhere, even in the city in public gardens. Like those of the villa inhabited at the end of the nineteenth century by the Swiss entrepreneur Ormond - now the Municipality - with its park of exotic essences, araucaria, euphorbia, which so interested the writer Italo Calvino, son of well-known botanists, who spent his youth here. The 25 types of palms of this garden, according to a statute of 1353, were pruned to provide the leaves during the Christian and Jewish Easter. The garden slopes down to the sea and skirts the 24 km cycle path from San Lorenzo al Mare to Ospedaletti, on the former coastal railway track.

Sanremo is sport,

in the blue of the Ligurian Sea. Located in a quiet inlet between Capo Nero and Capo Verde, Sanremo has a public marina and the private facility of Porto Sole.
